How To: Physical Exfoliation

What is Physical Exfoliation?

Exfoliation that deep cleans by sweeping away any pollutants sitting on top of the skin.

How do they work?

Physical exfoliants contain small particles and have a grainy textured surface that scrubs away dead skin, dirt and build up. Their scrub-like texture encourages cell turnover and instantly buffs and brightens. As we age, our natural exfoliation process slows down. Physical exfoliants can help speed up our natural exfoliation rate for smoother and healthier skin. Using a physical exfoliant also allows products to soak into the skin properly.

Always read the ingredients before selecting an exfoliant. With physical exfoliants, be sure to avoid ingredients with large exfoliants like nut shells or fruit pits. Large particles can be rough on the skin causing micro-tears. Smaller particles or granules like sugar are safer for the skin and less irritating.

How often should I use a Physical Exfoliant?

All skin types can benefit from exfoliating but your skin sensitivity will determine how often you should use a physical exfoliant. It should be the focus of your skincare routine if your skin is prone to blocked pores or blemishes. In general, dermatologists recommend exfoliating your face about two to three times a week. Exfoliate only once or twice a week if you have very sensitive skin prone to irritation.
